Usain Bolt sets new Twitter Olympics record

10 August 2012

Usain Bolt has set a new Twitter Olympic record with more than 80,000 tweets per minute after his 200m victory last evening.

The official Twitter account revealed the new record after Bolt successfully defended his 200m title and became the first athlete in history to retain both the Olympic 100m and 200m title.

Bolt took to Twitter to express his happiness after his win. "Thanks to all my real fans and people who believe in me. I am now a living legend that’s for sure," he tweeted to his 1.3 million followers.

The tweet was retweeted more than 8,000 times and favourited by nearly 2,000 people.

Jamaica dominated the 200m race with Yohan Blake winning silver and Warren Weir taking bronze.

Bolt’s new Twitter Olympic conversation record smashed some of the previous peaks in tweet chatter about the Games.

Last week Twitter announced another Olympic conversation peak happened when US gymnast Gabby Douglas earned the women’s all round gymnastics gold meal, with 38,000 tweets per minute happening during her victory and when swimmers Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte went head to head last week, there were 25,000 tweets per minute about the end of their race.
