Downing Street now offering Twitter exclusives

29 April 2013

Number 10 is offering journalists "Twitter Exclusives" in a bid to move with the digital age and build better relationships with audiences.

The move is a far cry from Prime Minister David Cameron’s infamous quote back in 2009 when he said he didn't use Twitter because "too many twits might make a twat", now his office are now using Twitter to break stories as well as attempt to stop negative ones.

The exclusives offered aim to secure relationships with journalists who often need to break stories online, but has been criticised by people who think Parliamentary announcements should be made in Parliament.

Number 10 is also using Twitter to try and stop negative stories before they gain speed. A source at Number 10 told the Guardian: “Every minute that passes the poison is spreading into the system to all sorts of roots and you need to find a way to cauterize that very, very quickly.”

All MPs are now being encouraged to take Twitter more seriously, especially in the run up to the 2015 elections.
