Play.com cuts 200 jobs as direct retail closes
10 January 2013
Around 200 jobs will be cut as Jersey retailer Play.com announced the closure of its direct retail business.
Play.com will become a marketplace-only, from March 2013, similar to Amazon. The company blamed the closure of its retail business following the UK government’s closure of a loophole allowing it to sell VAT-free CDs and DVDs from the Channel Islands.
The Play.com warehouse in St Helier is pulling out of Jersey and moving the remaining 200 staff to Cambridge. The 147 staff in Jersey will be made redundant, as well as 67 in Play.com’s Cambridge and Bristol offices.
In a statement Play.com said: "Moving forward we are intending to focus exclusively on our successful marketplace, which is our main business area, and to phase out the direct-retail part of our business."
Borer's FUSION Time Recording System
With a high number of employees on payroll, using Borer's FUSION Time Recording System will help reduce management involvement and the administrative effort required to manage a time management scheme.
It is labour demanding to manage and maintain a centrally administered or paper based flexitime system. Invariably, queries arise in relation to flexi balances and the process can become a very complicated one, particularly for the HR department.
Implementing an automated time and attendance system makes things very easy for both employees and their managers alike.
