Birmingham City Council

Birmingham City Council applies Borer's web based T&A solution.

March 2002

Employee time management has become faster and easier at Birmingham City Council thanks to a Web technology application from Wokingham-based Borer Data Systems. Efficient and easy-to-use ATRACS Web T&A provides the Council with up to - the-minute staff time and attendance information in a fast and secure, paper-free process.

“ At Birmingham City Council we pride ourselves on being at the
cutting edge of local government through our use of technology,” says Terry Clayson, Facilities Manager at the Council. “ATRACSWeb is easy to use at both admin and employee level and we’ve seen improved efficiency and reduced paper consumption through the online reporting features.”

Working in partnership with its Facilities Management Department, Borer Data Systems has upgraded the Council from a DOS-based attendance system to the new Web-enabled solution. Employees can now easily enter time and attendance information via a Web browser and managers and supervisors can quickly approve approve time sheets and leave requests over theCouncil’s Intranet. “Local authorities are increasingly seeking out IT based solutions to meet their staff management needs,” says Robert Chapman of Borer Data Systems. “Web-based software applications are one of the most significant and far-reaching benefits that Internet technology can bring to a local authority organisation and can form the basis of any local council’s initiative to improve levels of service to their citizens and businesses by helping to reduce costs and eliminate internal inefficiencies."

Software programs such as Atracs Web can eliminate the paperwork normally associated with the administration of attendance recording systems. This program can electronically deliver comprehensive and accurate reports and allows administration to be undertaken directly from any designated desktop PC using the PC’s own Web Browser.

The system harnesses the power of Web technology to deliver a range of features and benefits including staff attendance data direct to a manager’s desk. ATRACS Web can bring timesaving and added value benefits to any organisation operating a flexible working or formal attendance recording scheme. ATRACS Web works by linking the attendance and personnel data - which is held on an organisation’s central ATRACS database - to an Intranet web site. In the case of Birmingham City Council, any member of staff, with the required level of password clearance, can then access this information by simply logging on to this web site using their PC’s own Web browser.

So with the minimum of administrative effort, time and paperwork, managers can review a staff member’s attendance and absence history and list those members of staff currently in attendance, on holiday or absent. The manager can then use the system to authorise absence or holidays or generate an instant roll call listing all personnel on site; invaluable in the event of a site emergency.
