Clean Design Makes Greener, More Energy Efficient Products

“Clean Design” can help companies deal with stricter environmental policies and meeting producer responsibility legislation and product returns obligations set by European Directives (WEEE, RoHS & EUP).

Borer's 'Clean Design' principles make for greener products and energy savings. Companies will benefit from 'Clean Design', responding to consumers and suppliers demands, increased taxes on waste and costs of materials and ultimately reducing the impact of their products on the environment.

Achieving reductions in the cost of ownership in a product’s lifecycle is a driving force in both the design and the development of the Borer products. Our design imperatives are in line with the EU EuP directive 2005/32/EC.

• By designing our products to be smaller and more compact, the quantity of components by mass, and consequently the energy required to manufacture them is reduced.
• Smaller and integrated products use less packaging therefore the cost of shipping and packaging is reduced.
• By reducing the complexity of systems the infrastructure (cables, mains outlets, batteries and enclosures) and amount of time required to deploy/install the product is reduced.
• By designing energy efficient products, the amount of energy consumed is reduced.
• By providing monitoring and control tools which enable remedial tasks to be undertaken remotely, the number of post installation service calls (fuel miles) are reduced.
• By using less raw materials to manufacture the product, more of the product can be recycled and the volume of waste to dispose of at the end of its life cycle is reduced.

To achieve the above objectives we have reduced the power demand of our products and achieved high levels of product integration, thereby reducing the number of devices and the size of the devices deployed.

Borer's latest FUSION Smartcard Reader has been developed using 'Clean Design' principles, taking advantage of “Power over Ethernet” (PoE) technology.

1. Both Reader and Controller in one header head, eliminating the need to install a separate control panel, wall box and mains power supply at every door. (See Cost Comparison of the Borer System)
2. Works with Borer's Midspan Bridge which delivers both power and data over CAT5e cable directly to the reader from a centralized point.
3. Future Proof, firmware updates can be downloaded directly to the reader enabling new smart card standards to be supported, allowing the reader to upgraded instead of being replaced.
4. Power over Ethernet technology managing energy supply to the lock, extends the lock life and reduces the energy consumption at the door by up to 80%
5. TCP/IP Network Connection, up to 80% of services call are resolved by simply power resetting equipment - Borer's system has remote diagnostic and repair facilities built-in, enabling many service tasks to be undertaken remotely offsite.
